Abstract
I discuss some of the central ideas on money and wealth found in Aristotle and in Stoic sources. I try to show how the dispute between the Aristotelians and Stoics over the relationship between virtue and happiness and the role of the so-called external goods is mirrored in their views on money. Some particular issues are also discussed, e.g. why some Stoics insisted that the sage would engage in economic activities and be a “ true money-maker” .
